Hi Vann,
To find a home is easy, as long as it is freehold and legally built, you can own it and I can assist you in finding one :) But it's going to be a little tough looking for a business. What do you have in mind ?

Thx for the replies , and my apologies for being a bit vague to start with. The easiest way for me to respond , is as follows . My experience of life to date , has been varied, ex merchant navy , so a nautical business is a possibility , and i have owned and run pubs / bars and hotels , and been an entertainer for many years . Julie , my partner , has her own hair dressing salon . My idea , initially , would lay in the tourist / leisure industry , and involve a package , suitable for tourists to benefit , from the beauty and serenity of Langkawi , whilst heavily involving the local people . I am of course aware , that there are many obstacles to overcome , so guidance , and enlightment is that which i seek . ??? Again i hope this is not too vague , but the fact is , we are coming over with the intention to purchase , first and foremost , and get advice !!
I look forward to further correspondance , thx ,
Vann and Julie ;)

OK... first and foremost, I should think a place to call home is the place to start.
for around 200k one could purchase a "freehold" apartment or semi-detached bungalow in and around Kuah town... and, by "freehold" it means anybody, irrespective of residential status/nationality, could own it.
if I'm not mistaken, there used to be a minimum value whereby a non-Malaysian resident would be allowed to purchase property but it was rescinded recently to spur investment.
if you're interested, I could post some photos for you... but, it would only be possible for me to do this at the end of April, at the very earliest... and I'll either use one of those free image-hosting sites or one of those free-to-upload sites like rapidshare.com.
however, if you wish to get something around the Pantai Cenang/Tengah areas, then it might be a bit tedious as there are not that many "freehold" properties to begin with and even if one were to be available then the price would be astronomical... hey, it's the good old "supply versus demand" economic theory!
the only viable way is to buy land and build but there are some risks involved... this is where it gets a tad complicated... so, I'll leave it out for now.
secondly, your residence permit... you have a couple of options:
the first option is to apply for the "Malaysia, my second Home" program, but, this does not allow you to take up employment or set up a business.
the other option is to apply as an "investor."
what this means is that you have to set up a company with a paid-up capital of around 300k (I'm not too sure about the exact amount)... but, you still need a local partner to be able to do this.
I could put you in contact with a guy who has done this when you come in August.
so... next question please!

Thankyou langkawipur , your info is invaluable , and much appreciated , also your offer to meet up when we arrive . This is not a decision we are making lightly , nor a half baked plan , the wheels have been in motion for a while , and plans are afoot , Our intention would be to rent for a while whilst seeking the best options , and of course a budget has been taken into consideration , so any info prior to our visit will help . once again thx to all who responded .

re:apartment rental...
do you know the place Vistana Condo in Kuah?
the last time I checked a school-headmaster owns a couple of units and rents them out either on a daily or monthly basis.
the monthly rental for a fully-furnished unit (was that 2 or 3 bedrooms, I'm not too sure) is around RM1500 p/m.
there's also the so-called CHOGM Villa... the rates are a bit more, I think it's around RM2000.
then, there's this place near Langkawi Lagoon... but I've absolutely no idea what the rates are.
as for shoplots... you need to be here to look around to see if the location is suitable to your type of business and also to the market segment you are aiming for.
there is a row of new shoplots being built along Pantai Cenang... don't know if there'll be anything available till August because as far as I know shoplots they get taken up almost as soon as the foundations are laid!
so, again... next question please!

Sorry for not replying before but weve been away , thanks for being so informative and helpful , we would indeed like to meet up with as many people as possible , who may be able to help .Renting , as a start is a big possibility , and the fact that shop units are being put into effect is excellent . Could i ask if a hairdressing salon has been set up , or indeed could that business work ? I dont wish to bother you too much in advance of us arriving , as its still nearly 4 months away , but your help is much appreciated . thanks Vann and Julie

There's several hairdressing salon, big and small. The most popular one is DY CUT, their customer base is from the local to Japanese :) To have a hair cut and wash, the charge is RM 25.00 for man and RM 30.00 for lady. Hair treatment and dying would cost are around RM 200+.
If you are going to open up a hairdressing salon, it's better for you to rent a shop and live upstairs ....

You can hire a car at the airport when you arrive. It's better to apply for international license.

car hire... no problem, you can either get one upon arrival, just go to this row of counters near the baggage carousel while you wait for your luggage, or at the hotel you're staying in. they have different types of cars both manual and auto transmission.
please note that one gets a better rate for weekly/monthly rentals as opposed to daily rates.
driving license... as a tourist, depending from which country one comes from, one is entitled to drive for up to a month or so without any extra documents other than one's valid driver's license.
anything longer... then, it's a good idea to get one of those International licenses... however, if one plans to stay much, much longer, then one needs an official translation (from Embassies/Foreign Offices/Consulates) of one's valid driver's license for conversion to a Malaysian driver's license.
it's prudence to counter-check with your Embassy/Foreign Office/Consulate for confirmation.
next question, please!
