Opening Bank Account in Malaysia
« on: February 15, 2008, 09:23:27 PM »

I need to open a bank account in Malaysia so I can pay bills direct to other Malaysian banks from this account to keep the transfer costs down. I am non resident so I was wondering what the restrictions might be. Any infomation on this ( bank names) would be great.

Hy Pooley

My advice is different: go to any bank but NOT Maybank. They have the biggest restrictions on opening a bank acct for a foreigner. (If you have no workpermit/with long visa).

I went in to maybank with 40 000 MR which I wanted to deposit on an acct and they refused.
I went to the CIMB bank (the Bumiputra Bank) and could at least open a savings acct.
But there too I was lucky - as I am Swiss and in this bank works a Bumiputra who is also Swiss....

A friend of mine opened a saving acct in the RHB Bank. Her was just telling them he wanted to deposit 100 000 MR and they could not resist... :-)) - but also after some discussions.....

To get a full bank acct, not a savings acct. - is more difficult. As with a full bank acct goes the issuing of a checkbook . . .

I just now opened such an acct - but it was in the process of registering a company.

Good luck - if you insist you can at least open a savings acct - but whether you can do the transfers you want from this acct. or not - you would have to check.

Cheers

Sorry Pooley,
I bow to Mark,s greater knowledge/experience ( there goes my commission ! ).I have a Malaysian wife so that is probably  why I didn,t have a problem with Maybank.

Thanks both for your advice. I am visiting Sabah in May so I will pop in to a branch and see if I can open an account. Apart from Maybank do any of the others offer internet banking?
