Worries about the pound versus RM
« on: February 21, 2008, 09:06:25 PM »

:(

Last year when we visited Langkawi (February) we managed to get around 6.9 to the pound - today I checked on the M&S site - known for giving good exchange rates interest free and they are selling at 5.87. The Thai Baht is similarly less value at 58.6 to the pound. What are you able to achieve in Langkawi - usually the airport gives the best rate on the island? When I look at this, combined with the ever increasing cost of air fares and hotel accommodation, what used to be a good value holiday option is getting rather expensive - lets hope that things improve soon!

Cheers

Hi Steve,
sorry for delay in replying but busy working on house.Called into an currency exchange place in town ( sorry but airport too far away )and after 3% commission presently you would get 6 RM/GBP T/CHEQUE.
The prediction is that after the election the Ringitt will fall in value -from our perspective lets hope thats right.I don,t know if Airasia have finalised plans for flights from UK for later on this year as they are bound to be cheaper but I don,t think that MAS will change their pricing structure-  they will still be able to make their money with prices held high as sufficient joe public still prepared to fly with them.
When we purchased our property it was 7.2RM/GBP on bank transfer-currently 6.3 so it will hurt us expats as well in  the longer term!
Potentially it may cost you around the 100 gbp extra based on 1000gbp expenditure if the gap doesn,t close and lets hope there isn,t a fuel surcharge added to the cost of your flights !I will finish on that bright note !
regards Bob T
