Hey there folks,
I'm a newbie on the forum and have some questions I hope you can answer.
I haven't been to Langkawi yet, but am planning a trip later this year so check out some properties. I have a lot of questions (I like to do research beforehand!) so I'm hoping you old hands can help out!
1. Why do most of the expats seem to live in apartments instead of houses? Is it because there are lots of apartments for rent, or do the expats mostly prefer to live in a compound? (We are hoping to buy a house with a garden)
2. Does anybody ride a bicycle, or are cars so cheap everyone has one and riding a bike would be a death wish?
3. How's the level of recycling?
4. I know Langkawi has become a popular tourist destination, but I am curious about whether there are any issues about young ladies in skimpy bikinis (being a conservative Muslim country). I ask because I spent some time in Indonesia and decided to wear shorts/t-shirt in the sea because none of the local girls were half naked and I didn't want to offend anyone!
5. To buy a car, do you just need an international driver's license?
6. Any pubs have quiz night? ;D
Ok, so that last question isn't so important. But I hope to hear from you about these curiosities.
Many thanks,
Sandy

Not being a Langkawi expat myself, just a visitor for many years, I cannot answer all your questions but I suggest you check the
http://www.langkawi-gazette.com/
and the "Expat Essentials" section there.

Perhaps some of the expats find it too hot to look after a garden.I would imagine that quite a few of the expats live here for the winter months only ( UK winter ) so who would look after it during their absence ? Security may be better by living in a condo. There have been two break ins within the last couple of months in the area I live.We- the residents now employ security guards. There should be no real issues regards swimming attire but commonsense should prevail once leaving the beach areas.
